Passing over Sureanu Mountains -

15^th - 17^th  October 2010

 

Once Vali Dutu had asked me if I knew a track from Sibiu to Sarmizegetusa. I didn`t so I began to look on the map for a track. That was how the idea of a second expedition took shape.

It was late in the autumn and up in the mountains it was already possible to snow. So we had to find good tracks even for winter time. There were not too many tracks in the Sureanu Mountains because they had deep valleys, high peaks (about 2000 m) and endless forests. The lack of accommodation made us drive about 9 or 10 hours per day. We were tired a little bit but the tracks we followed asked for the best we could give.

We had a wonderful time there. The weather was cold but sunny. The autumn colors of the forests touched us for a very long time. We tasted the joys of nature, the dust of Loman, the bonfire and the snorers concert in Nasipiste, the good air of the heights, the delicious apples along the road, the short memento  about Decebal and his time, the darkness of the Ponorici cave and the stillness of Sureanu Lake.

There was a long track (about 370 km) of services roads, logging roads, river beds, narrow paths on the ridges and backwoods. One could follow our track on the map:

Sibiu - Rahau - Sasciori - Loman - Valea Cugir - Nasipiste - Batrana - Godeanu - Sarmizegetusa Regia - Prihodiste - Poiana Omului - Ponorici - Fizesti - Galati - Petrosani - Petrila - Ausel - Sureanu - Oasa - Valea Frumoasei - Paltinis - Home

-         Dana and Ionut - Patrol loaded with wood

-         Mihai – the mud eating Vitara

-         Bogdan and Mister Ardelean - Frontera with no front traction unit (as usual!!)

-         Flori and Catalin - Vitara which passed all the tests

-         Alexandra and Catalin – a new G that gave gossips the go-by

-         Stefania and Mihai - Landcruiser  head truck
